You can go directly to Kedarnath from Haridwar, in case you want to stay here for a night and to visit the beautiful Ganga aarti, one can stay and again resume the travel next morning from Haridwar.

If you plan to go by road it will take almost 7 hours. From Rishikesh, you can take either a cab or a bus to go to Joshimath and then from Joshimath reach Kedarnath.
