How to Reach Idukki Kerala:

The town is an offbeat hill station and has its own bus depot but no railway station or an airport. It’s nearest railway stations are Theni, Kottayam, and Cochin. The nearest airport is Cochin (Kochi) airport which is about 98 km. Taxi and buses from both Cochin and Kottayam ply regularly and road conditions are also good. Both KSRTC (govt buses) and private buses are available and KSRTC Buses are in very good condition.

By Road:

The road network is superb around this place and thus it is best reached by buses or taxis. The district is well connected by nearby cities like Kottayam, Cochin, Munnar, Thodupuzha, etc through buses and there are various taxi service providers also. The nearest railway station to the town is Theni which is about 83 km away and other nearby railway stations are Cochin and Kottayam which are 100 plus km away from the district. The nearest airport to the town is Cochin Airport which is about 98 km away. You can catch a flight from almost any city to Cochin Airport. November to February are the winter months and the temperature depends on which part of the hill station we are talking about. The western part has cool winters whereas the eastern part of the hill station experiences temperatures as low as -1 degree Celsius.

The town is a witness to various festivals during winters, starting from the ‘Ashtamudi Craft and Art Festival‘ that starts in end December and lasts till the first week of January then, Ernakulathappan Utsavam which is celebrated in last week of January.

This is a man-made marvel and stands proud as the second-largest arched dam in the world and the largest in Asia. It definitely is the best tourist place in Idukki. The dam connects two mountains Kuravar and Kurathi hills and is over the river Periyar. There goes a legend around the dam that once two natives Kuravar and Kuarthi were caught watching Sita Mata bathing by Lord Rama. Lord Rama cursed them to become of stone on opposite banks of Periyar river, and only after pleading a lot, he said that you will still be connected. Today the dam links both the hills.

The dam is 550 feet high and 650 feet wide. It generates a huge amount of electricity for the state.

It is part of the three dams that constitute the Idukki Hydroelectric Power Project namely the Arch Dam, Kulamavu Dam, and Cheruthoni Dam. This is the third-highest dam in India.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is the best wildlife sanctuary in the region sprawling over an area of 77 sq. km. and the Idukki water reservoir forms a part of this sanctuary and is its lifeline. The water reservoir itself is spread over 33 sq. km. and is the reservoir that forms parts of the three dams- the Arched Dam, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu.
